You live or die by targeted traffic to your website!

Your ability to send targeted visitors to your website is probably the most critical aspect of list building or indeed Internet Marketing. Without traffic the whole process will come to a halt! You may have the best site in the world but without potential subscribers calling at you site you well give up trying to make money on the Internet.

If you do not send highly targeted visitors to your site, your subscription rates will be depressingly low, whereas the opposite is also invariably true. The more accurately you target your visitors, the more new subscribers you will attract.

As you look around the net you will have noticed everyone is selling traffic to you at knockdown rates, this is not the way to go. You need to get your own visitors to your mailing list, your targeted visitors who will be your targeted subscribers. These are the best people to have on your team and they belong to you!

Many of the top marketers will always tell you that traffic is easy to get when the reality is it’s not. The first mail shot you send out may get you traffic or even subscribers, but you have to keep that up week after week and month after month to retain your traffic.

Also this will be the first time you will need to spend money, yes, traffic can cost money. The aim here is to spend $1 to make $100 or more. That is the secret format of getting traffic that no one is telling you. Even the car salesperson needs a space at the front of his shop to catch passing traffic and if he or she is on a busy high street they have to pay a lot of money for the space, just to get traffic through the door, so yes, it cost money to get traffic.

I will also be giving you my recommended traffic sites, so please if you do not belong to them give them a try, they work for me and maybe they will work for you too.

But seriously, your report should be packed full of information, expert advice and information about your product. Remember this is your business and as such you must have a good idea of your product, even if you are an affiliate marketer. I have made this clear on many occasions throughout the Modules; it’s a business you are involved with so you must have a clear understanding of the nature of the business.

Use your Squeeze or Landing Page

Your squeeze page or landing page must have everything you wish to say about your product in a condense format. I use the word ‘format’ because that is the way you must think here, you are selling the product. OK the report is free but the product is not. Other squeeze page considerations…

In my own recent testing, I have experimented with asking for only the e-mail address. So far, the results have indicated that asking for only the e-mail address seems to be far more effective than asking for two pieces of information. I also noted that not having anything at all, just a button to click works best of all.

But how does that work? You are asking!
I knew I was creating a FREE Membership Site that members have to register to have access to the content, so why capture names and email twice! Of course it proved to be “the one of choice” for this site and has worked better than the other.

You will see from the above examples the first just has a call of action to take you directly to the home page where you have a choice to register to see the copy where as the second version the call of action is your email and First Name which captures your information to our database.

The first one may be , in our case, more effective but the second example creates an optin for our autoresponder database, which allows us to keep in touch with you. Our autoresponder is of such that we can add you to our database if you join our FREE Membership Site.

This is probably partially because subscribers are lazy, meaning that completing only one line of information is obviously easier than having to complete two and partially because not asking for their name seems to allow them to retain a higher degree of privacy or confidentiality. Whether this works effectively in every market, I do not know, but it is certainly something worth trying.

What is a squeeze page and how do you create one?

Before you begin the attempt to build a successful list, you will want to start with a rigorous introduction to Squeeze or Landing pages. Squeeze pages focus specifically on capturing leads or making sales for a specific product – and make no attempt to give visitors a different option.

A squeeze page is a page designed to get names and email addresses. However, a squeeze page is usually a smaller type of landing page, which has an opt-in form in sight when the page loads.

So what is important to learn in an introduction
to squeeze pages?

First, it is important to recognize that all successful marketers use these. If you plan to sell a product over the Internet, you will want to use one too, rather than relying on sidebar opt-in forms and unfocused pages that do not convey a single point and a single call to action. What is a call of action? Simple put it’s when you for instance ask your visitors to “GO HERE”, this is known as a call of action, in the case of a squeeze page the only call of action you will need is the subscriber’s email address.

Another important thing you will want to take away from this introduction to squeeze pages is that every squeeze page contains the same parts and is focused on a SINGLE goal – getting the visitor to become a subscriber or buyer.

If there is anything you absolutely must take away from an introduction to squeeze pages, is that you cannot create a landing page or squeeze page that isn’t focused. This is actually where most people fail when they create a squeeze page; they don’t tune it to fit a specific audience. This is a big mistake.

Before you get started building your
squeeze page, you will need to:

• Make your offer actually have a point
• Facilitate the creation of your squeeze page

One thing you absolutely must have before you get started is an autoresponder.

Without any form of autoresponder, you are tossing potential bags of money in the garbage. Rather than creating a relationship with customers and potential customers and giving yourself the opportunity to attempt future upsales, you’re allowing them to leave and never return.

In addition to an autoresponder, you will need to have an actual offer that people want to buy. You may want to develop a product, such as an ebook or a piece of software. You will then want to get subscribers by offering the product for free (which is what many Internet marketers now do).

Another thing you absolutely must have before you get started is a check-out service. You may want to consider a PayPal account, which will allow you to make transactions quickly. PayPal is also the preferred choice for most Internet Marketers.

Which Graphic format do I use

And of course before you get started you must have a set of graphics, which usually includes a graphic header, a check out button, background wallpaper, and a half-decent picture of yourself. If you are not a graphics person and find it hard to create graphics then I suggest you try and find some graphics on the Internet. Make sure what you use is of a high enough standard or it will give your squeeze page and YOU a bad impression and could ruin any chance you may have getting your subscribers.

Graphic formats
Your graphic formats are jpg (jpeg), gif (also used for animations) and png. The preferred format is jpg because the file size is smaller than most with a good capture of colours. The png format is now becoming widely used because it gives you a jpg look and feel but with the added bonus that it has a transparency background unlike the jpg format and of course it has a small file size. The gif format will always be around because of its capability to give you not only transparency background but simple animation which makes it perfect for banners.

Try to avoid using Flash and Movie file formats for squeeze pages. These are fine for landing pages because you will find with landing pages you have far more reading to do which allows these format to load during your reading period, but squeeze pages need to be quick. So many times I have seen marketers using Flash or Movies on squeeze pages as you click your Traffic Exchange only to find that time has ran out and you never get to see what they have to say.

One way to increase your squeeze page conversion rate is by using black text or a white layout. Give them what they want, not what YOU
want to give them!

In order to start building your mailing list, you need to convince people to subscribe to that list. To do this, you have to have a place on the net from where they can subscribe.

In short, you need your own website to which you can attract targeted visitors who you can convince to subscribe to your mailing list.

However, before starting to build your website, it is extremely important to grasp the underlying concept of doing so from the specific point of view of list building. This is something that many marketers (even people with a good degree of experience) often get tragically wrong, but you cannot afford to do so.

From what you have read so far, you already understand that the plan for any online business is to sell ‘stuff’ that is related to a niche market as a way of generating an income.

You might therefore imagine that the next step is to create an information product – an e-book or special report for example – which you can sell from your website. Whilst this might be one option, it is certainly NOT the one that you should be focusing on if your primary objective is to build a mailing list.

What you should be focusing on is giving people exactly what they want as a way of convincing them to subscribe to your mailing list. Only after you have achieved this should you turn your attention to selling products or services to make money.

For instance, we have already established that the vast majority of net users are looking for information and that they want that information for free if at all possible. So, why not keep them happy by giving them exactly what they want? If you keep them happy, it is far easier to convince them to sign up for your mailing list, which is after all the primary objective of your present activities. Here’s the step by step mailing list building process laid out in very simple terms:

They want free information about photographic equipment (in our example).

• Hence, you build a website that gives targeted visitors a ton of free information about exactly what they want.
• At the same time, you make it abundantly clear that there is a plethora of extra free information available to anyone who subscribes to your mailing list. You also offer ‘incentives’ to further encourage visitors to subscribe.
• It is only after a visitor has become a list subscriber that you start to try to make money out of them. Prior to that, the only thing that you are doing is communicating with your visitor and giving them exactly what they want.

So, when building your list building website, you need to focus on providing niche targeted information. In particular, you need to provide the information that your research has already highlighted as representing what people in your niche are really looking for.

For instance, you should already have a list of the most commonly asked questions in your market sector.  Thus, your site should be constructed to answer as many of these questions as possible. You already know what kind of things people are looking for in your market, so feature information about where they can find these things as well.

Understand that the focus of your website should never be on making money. Instead, your website is nothing more than the ‘open door’ to your business, a place where visitors can interact with what you are doing whilst learning what they need to know.

Building a site of this nature is critically important for another reason too. By doing so, you establish your authority and expertise in your market niche. By giving your targeted visitors the information that they most want or need, you immediately impress upon them your connection with and knowledge of your market. It naturally follows that if you establish itself as a recognized authority and expert, it becomes far easier to convince people to subscribe to your mailing list. After all, if an expert about any topic in which you have a great deal of interest offered to send valuable information to you by e-mail two or three times a week for free, you can be pretty certain that you would snatch their hand off.

By establishing your expertise with an information packed site that is focused on providing exactly what people need, you very quickly put yourself in this favored position. Thus, by focusing your site building efforts on providing information, you actually accelerate the rate at which you build your mailing list.

As long as you never forget that, in order to be an effective mailing list builder, you have to give people what they want rather than what you want to give them, you will never fail to build targeted mailing lists.

Setting your site up…

The first thing that you need to be a successful list builder is the right image. Part of this can be accomplished by establishing your expertise but well before this, you have to create an image that shouts ‘professional’ at anyone who might be considering doing business with you or of subscribing to your list.

In order to do this, the first step is to have your own DOMAIN NAME and WEB HOSTING ACCOUNT because whilst you can build a website using FREE resources, nothing is likely to give potential clients and subscribers a worse impression. Given that the total cost of registering a domain name and paying the first month hosting fees is less than $18 in total, it really is not worth taking this chance. It is a fact that potential subscribers will have a negative impression of your business if you use free resources (such as free web hosting). The second example:

Remember we are going to use Photography as our second example so we start with Google as before.

Here’s what you’ll be looking for:

• Whether or not the topic has results
• Whether or not the topic has a number of valid “sub topics” with more than 10,000 searches per month

So, “Photography” has potential. This is a VERY popular topic with lots of people typing in some very profitable search phrases. If your topic is similar, give the topic a check. While you’re here, look for 5-10 phrases that you think you could provide information and training about. You want the phrases to be as specific as possible but still have a monthly search volume greater than 5,000.

From “Photography” I choose:

• Photography studio
• Photography prints
• Black and white photography
• Interior photography
• Model photography

If your topics have only 1 or 2 word phrases – like 4 of my photography ones are – then enter the phrase into the “Enter one keyword or phrase per line” box.

Select a new topic from the resulting list that interests you, that you think you could teach or sell that has at least 3 words, and that has a Search Volume of at least 5,000.

In my photography example, I took my terms and ran a second search on each:

• Photography studio becomes photography studio lighting
• Photography prints fell off the list (no interesting phrases with enough searches)
• Black and white photography already 3 words
• Interior photography fell off the list (no interesting phrases with enough searches)
• Model photography fell off the list (no interesting phrases with enough searches)
• Photography studio becomes photography studio equipment
• Photography studio becomes professional photography studio
• Photography studio becomes home photography studio (this one doesn’t quite meet the 5,000 search volume number but I know from personal experience that there’s plenty of interest among amateur photographers)

Notice that I “lost” 3 phrases (photography prints, interior photography, and model photography) so I added 3 phrases from “photography studio” that met the criteria. Once you’ve got your five, 3+ word topics, write them down and move on. Do this for each of the three “finalist” topics on your list.

Once you’ve got them all, let’s see if the topics you’ve picked are qualify as truly online clientele that will make you money.

Give Your Site the Best Chance to Make Money

OK, so you have your 15 potential topics that people are searching the internet to find information about and solutions for. The next thing we need to find out is if any of the topics will make money! Will this process guarantee that you’ll make money with your product? Nope. But, if you follow this step you’ll know for sure that there is a market for the taking!

It’ll help you keep things in order if you make a folder on your Desktop to keep all your work together. Just call it your “topic name” product for example “Photography Studio Product”.

How do you find out if you will make money from your product? Easy. We just need to figure out if the people searching for your topics are buying “stuff” as well.

There are many different ways to do this but this is the way I like best, as before with

First of all go to GoogleAdWords and type in your top phrase -  (the one with the most searches) for instance I would type in “photography studio lighting”.

Who wants to go back to school?

To be able to paint a bigger picture of the process I am going to use 2 examples, Perspective Drawing being the first example. I will not be selling tangible products. Selling physical products is by far the easier way to go, but no, I am selling a service and what is hard, I am teaching. Who wants to go back to school?

The other example will be Photography. This is such a vast area with a high amount of tangible products to sell. This area is the most common and profitable Niche market out there, physical, touchable goods.

The first example:

So I placed that in the box, keyed the CAPTCHA letters, and pressed the Search button, which gave me a monthly search of over 1 million.

Here’s what you’ll be looking for:
• Whether or not the topic has results
• Whether or not the topic has a number of valid “sub topics” with more than 10,000 searches per month.

Perspective gave me – 1,220,000 search a month. Take a look below and see for yourself.
From “Perspective” I choose (in no special order):

1. Drawing in Perspective – 40,500
2. Drawing with Perspective – 40,500
3. perspective in drawing – 40,000
4. What is perspective – 18,100
5. Linear perspective – 12,100
6. perspective art – 12,100
7. Learning perspective – 9,900
8. Perspective Drawing – 4,400
9. Illustrator perspective – 4,400
10. perspective drawing lessons – 1,000

What I want to do is teach people Perspective, yet I only have 1,000 for perspective drawing lessons. I need to take that away from my list, it serves no purpose. “Perspective Drawing” and “Illustrator Perspective” are low in searches but I feel they have potential. Learning perspective is my only choice to give me anything close to what I want. But I am not giving up!

The problem I have here is, I want to TEACH Perspective, not sell a product, but if it leads to selling products then that’s a bonus. I am offering a service for which I want to get paid and my clients are students and professionals such as Architects, Artists etc. And to make matters worse for me the word Perspective has other meaning such as Media Studies, Behavioral Psychology, Study Psychology etc… all under Perspective with high monthly searches, not good for me.

  Why targeting is essential…

  Although the vast majority of people who get online every day do so to find information, they are not all looking for exactly the same type of information. If they were, it would be very easy indeed to connect with them because you would know exactly what they were looking for without any research whatsoever. However, because this is clearly not the case, you need to dig a little deeper.

  Most people do not seek information from the net on a completely untailored, general level. On the contrary, they usually have a specific questions need answering or a distinct problem that needs solving. In other words, they are looking for information of a definitive nature, which means that it is your job as a marketer to discover the specifics of what they’re looking for. If you can do this, you can make the information that you provide the central product or service that your business sells. By doing so, you satisfy their specific requirements or needs, hence they are happy because they have the answers that they needed whilst landing a successful sale ensures that you are happy too. In order to do this most effectively, you cannot expect to provide information to every individual who logs onto the internet every day. To be effective, you have to narrow you own targeting down far more strategically.

  Hence, you have the idea of trying to set up a business that is focused on a particular market sector or niche.  By doing so, you can identify and then provide the exact information that people in that niche really want, thereby creating satisfied customers. However, you must fully understand the concept of narrowing down your business focus very precisely because if you try to take on too much, you will inevitably fail. For example, there are billions of people who turn to the net every day to search for information about health. There is a massive potential market for entrepreneurs who can provide valuable health-related information via the internet. On the other hand, the general concept of an online ‘health market’ represents a massively diversified market.  It covers everything from people who are looking for cures for the common cold to seeking ways to comfort those in the final stages of terminal cancer.

  

  Without putting in the work of several lifetimes, there is no way that one individual could do any more than scratch the surface of such a massive market, hence focusing on ‘health’ would not work. It does not represent a niche market of the kind you must look for as online marketer.

  If however you were to focus on providing information to people who are seeking solutions for a long-standing eczema problem, you have found a market niche. In this case, you are looking at a small sub-sector of the health market where people are seeking very specific and definite information.

  If you can provide that information and if what you provide is of enough quality and value to convince eczema sufferers to spend money, you have the core of a business. Spend no more than five minutes thinking about it and you could probably come up with a list of several hundred niche markets within the health sector, as you could if you thought about almost any market on a general level.

  However, remembering that your primary objective here is to build a profitable mailing list, it is a fact that some niche markets are far more attractive than others for reasons that I will explain in the next section.

  
  

  Every niche is not the same

  Every online marketer who has been around the business more than five minutes knows that ‘The Money is in the List’ but what exactly does this mean? How or why is there money in the list, and perhaps more importantly, how do you put some of that money in your bank account?

  For the time being, let’s continue to run with the idea that your primary business model is based on selling eczema related information to sufferers who are willing to pay for it.

  In this situation, the first thing you might look for is a suitable product or service that you could sell into this market. Once you have done this, the next step might be to ‘contact’ as many eczema sufferers as possible by targeting all of your marketing and advertising efforts at people who suffer from this particular complaint.

  Through your marketing and advertising, you bring these people to your eczema focused website and convince them to subscribe to your mailing list.  Now you have the ability to send promotional e-mail messages to these individuals as often as you like because by their action of subscribing to your mailing list, they gave you specific permission to do so.

  The money is in the List

  In every e-mail message that you send to them, you now promote a product or service. Do this and over time your activity inevitably generates sales, which is where the idea that “The money is in the List” comes from. As long as you keep promoting, you will keep selling, adding extra profit to your account with every outgoing e-mail message.

  But think about this example for a moment. The individual who either suffers from eczema or knows someone who does subscribed to your mailing list.  They might possibly have bought your ‘eczema treatment’ product or service because they have a medical problem that needs to be solved.

  Assuming that this initial product or service does the trick, what are you going to sell them now? After all, they had a problem that you have solved, so they obviously don’t need more information or product recommendations about eczema treatment.

  You can probably see that you also have a problem here. By choosing this particular market niche around which to build your mailing list, you have made it difficult to profit from your list in the future because your list members only have one problem (that you know of) and you have already solved it.

  Thus, in order to build a mailing list from which you can profit on a long-term, consistent basis, you must focus on a market sector or niche where there is a degree of longevity and continuity. For example, self-improvement is a massive online market and one in which people are always looking for extra information or assistance.

  After all, it is a very rare individual indeed who is entirely satisfied and happy with everything about their life.

  Certainly, I have never met anyone who is interested in self-help or self-improvement who ever reached this particular stage of contentedness.

  In a similar manner, any market niche that is related to hobbies or interests is one where there is a natural degree or level of longevity and continuity.
